    Antique Philadelphia Museum Hand Blown Ground Glass Specimen Jar of Angora Wool 6.5" Tall.
    This is a rare opportunity to own a vintage collectible that actually came out if the Museum.From the late 1800s through 1900s museums stored their vast collections of specimens in beautiful ground glass apothecary jars. However, the jars leaked, they were fragile, and not easily manageable for research scientists so many museums decided to replace the jars with more appropriate modern jars. As some of the collections were maintained in sometimes toxic chemicals such as formalin, the old bottles were not re-sold to individuals for fear someone would reuse them to store food. Some jars were retained by the museum, others donated to under-funded museums, some wereircu given to employees as keepsakes, but the vast majority of the bottles were destroyed. This small (5.5" tall) specimen jar contains a specimen of angora wool with the label still attached. It likely dates between late 1800s to mid 1900s. The ground glass jar has a gorgeous matching glass stopper (the original matched pair). It is in great shape, free from breaks or cracks, but not free from dust. Clarity is excellent. The bottle measures about 5.5" tall from jar top (glass stopper top puts height at about 6.5") x close to 2.5" wide. The buyer should not use the jar to store food.
