Large 20” 1950’s Ride-On Steiff Boxer Dog, Very Good Condition w/ Ear ButtonThis listing is for a circa 1950’s Steiff Boxer Ride-On Toy in very good condition. Standing 20” tall, this stuffed Steiff toy is absolutely beautiful. The condition of this vintage Steiff toy is very good, showing very little signs of age or use. It has been pampered and well cared for during the nearly 75 years of its life. The ride-on toy was released as “Reitt Sarras” and later became known as “Riding Boxer”. One of the earliest releases after Steiff resumed production following WWII, this stunning toy is rarely seen today in such good condition. Although the ride-on dog did come with a collar, it was the ears that most children held on to as they were being pulled along. Fortunately for us, this nearly 2-foot-tall toy was put away before much damaged was inflicted.
The mohair covering the metal frame is in very good to excellent condition with no significant wear or damage. There is no staining, no orders, no threadbare areas or significant wear, and no damage other than minor damage to the ears. The airbrush finish is also in very good to excellent condition with no loss of color or damage. The brown shading and highlights that gives him his athletic and toned look are still evident. The major condition issue of note is the left ear. Firmly attached, there are some loose threads, tears to the lining of the ear, and light staining. One corner of the ear is slightly separated from the head and appears to be related to the loose threads. The photos are an accurate representation of the condition of the ear. The right ear is in good condition with the Steiff ear tag attached although there is a slight separation of the layers of fabric on one edge of the cursive Steiff button. The growler box string pulls and recoils but makes no noise. The white rubber wheels are hard and show signs of wear consistent with light use on a rough surface. The blue wheels retain most of their paint with only minor paint loss and scratches, again consistent with light use. All four hubcaps are attached and show some loss of the tinning or surface finish. The original red and white pull rope and painted red wood handle are attached to the black metal frame or chassis. The chassis is straight and solid with no bowing or bending. There are a few areas of paint loss and pitting but most of the gloss black surface is intact.
Overall, the condition of this vintage Steiff Ride-On Toy is very good. The stuffed dog shows no signs of repair or restoration and is in original condition. A remarkable, well-preserved example of post war Steff craftsmanship at its finest. The introduction of the Reitt Sarras in 1950 heralded the return of Steiff to the world stage as the premier stuffed toy manufacturer in the world, a position held for decades to follow. This beautiful Boxer is looking for his/her/their forever home! Adopt today!
